Children and Young People in Custody 2009-10: An analysis of the experiences of 15-18 year olds in prison

Published jointly by HM Inspectorate of Prisons and the Youth Justice Board, Children and Young People in Custody is an annual survey of more than 1,000 boys and girls in young offender institutions (YOIs).

Covering all aspects of prison life from induction and reception, to access to education, employment and training, to sentence planning and plans for resettlement, the survey gives an important overview of children's experiences in YOIs.

Though the number of children in custody had dropped quite significantly since the previous year's survey, it is particularly concerning that more children reported feeling frightened or unsafe at some time, and, despite more than 94% of sentenced children saying they wanted to stop offending, only half felt they had done something whilst inside which would make them less likely to offend in the future.
